Act! Cut! Play! Fashion Films

On December 16 three brand new fashion films premiered at Lumière Cinema in Maastricht, and will from now on travel the globe in the international fashion-theatre-, film- and art world.

Act! Cut! Play! is a new interdisciplinary talent development project that has the ambition to lift the quality of fashion films to a higher level. Three teams existing of a designer, theatre maker, and filmmaker from either the Netherlands or Flanders, where challenged to work together to investigate the possibilities and boundaries of their disciplines and the provided ‘format’ of the fashion film. With the incorporation of a theatre maker, the three teams where challenged to make the narrative an important element within the films.

Act! Cut! Play! is an initiative of FASHIONCLASH, Flemish Arts Centre De Brakke Grond and MoMu – ModeMuseum Provincie Antwerpen.

Project format
These three interdisciplinary teams collaborated on the development of three short fashion films from start to end. Previously, fashion films were mostly used by brands as a moving lookbook for their new collections. Over the course of the last years the fashion film has been on the rise: fashion film festivals are popping up across the globe. The films are becoming more innovative and visually striking, but what stands out is that in both national as well as international fashion films the narrative is under developed, and subordinate to its visual qualities. This is precisely what makes this an excellent opportunity to combine fashion, theatre and film and mold it into the right shape.

Première & Presentation
On December 16th the three films premiered at Lumière Cinema in Maastricht.
After this the Act! Cut! Play! films will travel all over the globe starting from Amsterdam at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week (26 – 29 January 2017 in De Brakke Grond 28 January 2017 in de Westerunie), Antwerp (De Studio, 9 February 2017), Cinedans (16 -20 March 2017), FASHIONCLASH Festival (29 June – 2 July 2017) and several other stages including international fashion film festivals.

‘Your approval is not essential’

When a chance supermarket encounter unlocks untapped passion in an ordinary woman, her grey life quickly goes into sensory overload. ‘Your approval is not essential’ sheds a colourful, whimsical light on what happens when you let go of your inhibitions and – out of the blue – start embracing life’s quirky pleasures.

"The Parallel Pyramid Platform" is a highly aesthetic and witty game show in which sixteen contestants construct a gigantic pyramid shaped sculpture, working with and against each other, in order to make it to the top first. A film that explores the friction between the individual versus the collective. A never-ending universe in which, as the sculpture grows, blue becomes red. How one can only replace the inevitable void by start building.

Life of Ornament - Viewmaster Projects & FASHIONCLASH

FASHIONCLASH teamed up with Viewmaster Projects within the context of the Life of Ornament project that is on display since December 1. Two gigantic video art works are projected on the Eiffel building in the Sphinxkwartier in Maastricht.
In addition we have invited performer Daan Couzijn and fashion designer Maarten van Mulken to create new work inspired by the Sphinx ornaments. In cooperation with filmmaker Daniel van Hauten the will create a music video / fashion film in which they combine their disciplines and fascinations with the heritage of the Sphinx.
Result will premiere on December 16th at Lumière Cinema and will be presented at various events in 2017.

Life of Ornament is a crossover project combining cultural heritage and time-based media. Artist duo Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács present two video works in which the renowned ceramic decals of Sphinx and the Société Céramique come to life. Projected large onto the historic Eiffel Building’s facades, the once motionless, decorative prints on saucers, cups, plates, and teapots transform into animated leitmotifs that flow into one another, creating new juxtapositions of the imagery. Using modern digital techniques, the ornaments ‘detach’ from the decorative dinnerware they embellish. The two video works – one highlighting floral prints, the other, landscape motifs – honour the outstanding design of Maastricht’s manufacturing industry and function as a contemporary animation, entwining different cultures and style periods.

Life of Ornament runs parallel to the Eiffel Building’s renovation. In the evening, when refurbishing work halts, the two video works illuminate the scaffolding scrim surrounding the building. The projections will partly move with the different stages of the restoration.

The collection features t-shirs, backpacks, jackets and trouwers in various prints also designed by the designer.

The pieces can be bought at The Dutch.

C3:Diversity - Day 2

C3:Diversity Project ended yesterday with a public presentation at Centre Céramique. Three teams, each consisting out of one Dutch and one London designer, presented the results of their two day collaboration.
The participating designers where given the challenge to create a concept related to the theme of Diversity. It is fair to conclude that the pitch had no winner but in stead they are all winners after their strong proposals and innovative ideas. The short-term project that took place just two days proved the importance and relevance of such encounters which enable designers not only to collaborate but also to research new ideas that could contribute to a sustainable development of the fashion industry, their personal development but most of al to a better well being. That is exactly what FASHIONCLASH mission is, to organize encounters that will challenge fashion with aim to contribute to a better world.

The presentation was a display of not only new ideas but also new friendships. All participants reflected that the process of the collaboration is as important as the end result and expressed their desire to continue. The conclusion of the project is basically that this is just the begging.

Participants:
From London: Bella Gonshorovitz, Michelle Muirhead and Carmen Ludwig
From Maastricht: Victoria Sophie Keller, Maarten van Mulken and Ebby Port

C3:Diversity took place in the context of MCCCI Conference, a two-day event on the cultural and creative industries. The first day, Monday September 26, will have an academic focus and is organised by Made2Measure(Maastricht University) in collaboration with FMA. During this day, young scholars in the field of finance and investment in creative ventures are invited to present their research. FOLIA performance at FASHIONCLASH Festival

Project Sally Maastricht presented a “Folia” dance performance at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016, a powerful and visually stunning piece performaned by two very talented dancers.

Each year Project Sally Maastricht invites young choreographers during their Choreographic Residencies Program. Especially for the 8th edition of FASHIONCLASH Festival they assigned the talented French choreographer, Martin Harriague to create a new work.
For this performance Martin Harriague once again collaborated with with Maastricht based designer Mieke Kockelkorn. Last year they created Tabula Rasa

'Throughout history, cultural heritage has been threatened by the constant evolution of the world’s social and political concerns. Too often, the result of this threat has been the disappearance of some of the world’s greatest cultural achievements.'
Folia is inspired by the traditions and history of the Iberian peninsula where Martin was born, creating a contemporary adaptation of ‘La Folia’ - a quick-paced, tumultuous dance dating back to the late 15th century.

'COTTON' dance performance by Mami Izumi/GOTRA at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

JIVIKA BIERVLiET at FASHIONCLASH Festival 2016

design by Jivika Biervliet | eyewear by Peter Hsieh | photo by Kevin Daniel Croes
Jivika Biervliet is a menswear designer based in Arnhem. In 2010 she graduated from the HKU in Utrecht. In 2012 she started as an independent designer her self titled brand JIVIKA BIERVLiET.
Besides designing menswear she also started with designing kidswear and collaborating with dancers. Her strong preference for menswear arose from the feeling that menswear have more rules. Jivika Biervliet searches for existing borders in order to exceed them. Characteristic for her designs are the materials, the clean lines and also the playfulness within the collections. The pieces are conceptual, experimental and wearable at the same time.

Jivika will collaborate with jewelry designer Peter Hsieh for her new collection, shown on Friday July 1 during Show 2 21:00, get your tickets here. You can also see Jivika Biervliet's work during FASHIONCLASH Festival at the Heritage Exhibition (July 1 + 2 at SAMdecorfabriek)

When did you realise you wanted to be a fashion designer? How long have you been designing clothing?
It actually happened very accidentally. When I was 18 I subscribed for an art contest and chose to design a fashion collection while I had never designed anything. So I just did it and teached myself really quickly how to sew, and then I won (it was a really bad collection). After that I did and entrance exam at the HKU and in 2010 I graduated in the course Fashion Communication. Right after that I started to focus on menswear.

The fascination for fashion is in my blood, at the age of 14 I chose to go that way in school as well and went toward studying Fashion and Creation. My creative en technical skills were encourage more so after Secondary school I therefore chose the Fashion Academy of Ghent. However after two years I decided to specialize in leather processing, focusing on handbags. And am since this year studying shoe design at SASK academy in Sint-Niklaas.
