Today we have the honour to introduce you to the Georgian Uta P. Bekaia, who is a multimedia artist living in New York City.

Hi, Uta! Please introduce yourself.

I’m Uta P. Bekaia, living in New York City, but I was born in Tbilisi, Georgia.

What is your field of specialisation?

I’m a multimedia artist. I use clothing as a medium for art.

What inspires you in general?

Digging into my subconsciousness.

What place or city do you find inspiring?

Well, wherever I am.

What is it like to be a young designer in your city/country?

New York City is a hard place to work, but I appreciate it!

What attracts you about the FASHIONCLASH platform?

FASHIONCLASH is an open-minded initiative. The fashion presented there is amazing, and it’s also very artistic, which I prefer.


The name of your collection is “Duality”. What inspired you for this collection?

Inspiration for this collection came from the practice of lucid dreaming. With this project I’m trying to create an otherworldly surreal vision, and research the probability of the existence of another ‘I’. On a more general level, the questions of a parallel universe, duality of a persona and the possibility of having a different life path are also present in the collection.

Dreamy, surreal, dark.

Did you always want to work in the field of fashion?

I worked in fashion before and I liked it. Now I use fashion as a medium to create artwork.

Can you remember the first piece you designed?

Yes I can, it was inspired by a rave. The piece was a yellow angel with huge platforms, shoulder pads and yellow hair.

What kind of feeling do you want to transfer with your latest collection?

I want to create an environment of esoteric theatre.

What on your playlist when you are working?

Baroque and Shoegaze music.

What book shaped you?

100 Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Who is your favourite fashion designer?

Alexander McQueen is the number one for me.

What is the latest thing you bought for yourself?

Sweatpants.

What is your favourite fairy tale and why?

I love fairy tales; I can’t tell which one is my favourite. In general I draw inspiration from folk tales. I use them a lot in my work.

If your life were a song what would the title be?

Swimming in the See of Light.

What made you smile today?

 Little French bulldog.

Travelling.
